Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital and, for almost every visitor, the first and last place you’ll be — nearly all international flights route through Bole International Airport here. It’s worth treating as a real destination rather than just a layover: 2–3 days covers the city’s main sights comfortably.

The altitude will surprise you

Addis Ababa sits at roughly 2,355m (7,726ft) — higher than Denver, and one of the highest capital cities in the world. It’s a genuinely common first surprise for visitors: expect cooler evenings than “African capital” suggests (a light jacket matters after dark year-round), and give yourself a slower first day if you’re arriving directly from sea level.

What to see

• National Museum of Ethiopia — home to “Lucy,” one of the most complete early hominid fossils ever found.
• Holy Trinity Cathedral — the country’s most significant Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral, and Emperor Haile Selassie’s burial site.
• Merkato — one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, for a genuinely local (not tourist-oriented) experience.
• Entoto Mountain & Entoto Park — the forested ridge above the city where Menelik II founded his first capital, and the best skyline views in Addis.
• Unity Park & Addis Ababa’s New Public Spaces — the former Imperial Palace grounds, now a museum and zoo, and the anchor for the city’s ongoing corridor-development boom.

Addis Ababa is mid-makeover

Since December 2022, the city administration has been running a large, still-expanding “corridor development” project — repaving and widening major roads with landscaped medians, dedicated cycle lanes, and wide pedestrian paths, and building new civic landmarks along them. By 2025 the project had delivered more than 96km of new pedestrian paths and 100km of cycle lanes across several redeveloped corridors, with further phases opening since. Unity Park was the first major landmark to open (2019) and predates the wider project, but the same push has since added Sheger Park (also known as Friendship Square, a new public square and artificial lake near Meskel Square) and the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, commemorating the 1896 Battle of Adwa.

This is a genuinely fast-moving project rather than a fixed set of sights — expect new corridors, parks, and museums to keep opening, streets you remember from an old write-up to look different, and construction in progress in some areas. Treat any specific itinerary built around it as a starting point to confirm locally, not a fixed plan.

Where to eat and drink

Ethiopia is coffee’s birthplace, and Tomoca — roasting in Addis since 1953 — is the classic starting point, though a proper sit-down coffee ceremony at a traditional restaurant is worth seeking out too. For dinner, a handful of large cultural restaurants pair a full Ethiopian menu with live regional music and dance — a good first or last night in the country.

Shopping and galleries

Beyond Merkato, Shiro Meda is where the city actually shops for traditional dress and handicrafts, and a small but real contemporary art scene is anchored by Addis Fine Art and the Gebre Kristos Desta Center.

Day trips from the capital

If you have a spare day, Wenchi Crater Lake — a volcanic lake about 3 hours west of Addis, with an island monastery and hot springs — is the classic full-day trip out of the city. Entoto, by contrast, is close enough to do as a half-day without leaving the metro area.

Getting oriented

Addis Ababa is large and traffic can be genuinely slow at peak times — don’t schedule sights back-to-back across town without buffer time. Ride-hailing apps operate in the city and are generally an easier, more predictable option than hailing a taxi on the street.
