Addis Ababa’s art scene doesn’t announce itself the way the city’s historical sites do, but it’s genuinely active — worth an afternoon if the National Museum’s ancient history and Unity Park’s imperial history have you wanting to see where Ethiopian art is now, rather than only where it’s been.
Modern Art Museum – Gebre Kristos Desta Center
Founded in 2005 on Addis Ababa University’s College of Business and Economics campus, the center is named for and dedicated to Gebre Kristos Desta, generally regarded as the pioneer of Ethiopian modern painting. It holds the largest collection of his work alongside changing exhibitions from other Ethiopian and international artists. Entrance is free.
Addis Fine Art
A contemporary gallery with a sister space in London, representing emerging and established artists from Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa to an international market. Where the Gebre Kristos Desta Center is historical, Addis Fine Art is current — a better stop if you want a sense of where Ethiopian contemporary art is heading rather than a retrospective.
Practical
Neither is a large time commitment — an hour or so each is enough for most visitors. Both pair naturally with a day that already includes the National Museum or Holy Trinity Cathedral, rather than needing a dedicated day of their own.
