Mount Entoto rises directly north of the city, its ridge sitting a few hundred meters above central Addis — enough to turn the morning haze into a proper skyline view once you’re up there, and enough of a temperature drop that Addis itself will feel warm by comparison when you come back down.
Why it matters historically
Before Addis Ababa existed, Entoto was the capital: Emperor Menelik II founded his first base here in the 1880s, before his wife Empress Taitu convinced him to move down into the warmer valley that became the modern city. The octagonal Entoto Maryam church and the stone remains of Menelik’s palace still stand near the summit, and are usually visited together with the museum next to the church.
The park itself
Entoto Natural Park opened in 2021 as part of the city’s broader push to turn its green spaces into proper public parks rather than just forest. Expect paved walking paths through eucalyptus forest, cafes and restaurants, an artificial lake, horseback riding, and a cinema and library — plus the “Ethiopia” hillside sign that’s become a standard photo stop. A traditional coffee ceremony brewed over coals is worth timing a stop around.
Practical shape of a visit
- A straightforward half-day trip from the city center — no need to build a whole day around it, and no need to leave the Addis Ababa metro area to do it.
- It’s noticeably colder and windier at the ridge than downtown — bring a jacket even if you’re comfortable in the city.
- Ride-hailing apps cover the route up; agree on a return plan with your driver rather than assuming you’ll easily find another car at the top.
