Merkato (Addis Mercato) is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa — a sprawling, genuinely local trading district rather than a curated tourist market. It’s organized loosely by trade: separate zones for spices, coffee, textiles, metalwork, and general goods, spread across a large area of central-west Addis Ababa.
What to actually expect
- This is not a polished tourist experience — it’s a working market that happens to be fascinating to visit, which is exactly its appeal and exactly why it needs a bit more preparation than a typical souvenir stop.
- Go with a guide or a local contact, especially on a first visit. The market is large, layout isn’t intuitive, and having someone who knows it well makes the difference between a rewarding couple of hours and just getting lost.
- Keep valuables minimal and secured. Busy, crowded markets are a common target for petty theft in most major cities, and Merkato is no exception — leave passports and unnecessary cards at your hotel.
- Bargaining is normal and expected for most goods — prices aren’t fixed the way they would be in a formal shop.
