Wenchi isn’t a drive-up-and-look viewpoint — getting down to the lake and back is most of the experience, and it’s usually done in a fairly fixed sequence.
The descent
From the crater rim, it’s a steep drop down to the lake shore. Most visitors hire a horse, with a local handler walking alongside, for the way down and back up rather than walking both legs — arranged on the spot with local guides and horse associations who work the rim, not booked in advance.
The lake and the monastery
At the shore, dugout canoes — also hired locally — cross to the island monastery. It’s a working religious site, not a museum piece, so modest dress and normal visiting etiquette apply.
Hot springs and waterfall
A set of hot springs sits near the base of the crater, alongside a waterfall, and is a popular stop to warm up after time on the water — bring a swimsuit if you want to get in.
Practical
This is a full day from Addis, not a quick stop — budget accordingly rather than trying to combine it with other sights on the same day. Horse and boat hire are arranged locally rather than pre-paid, so confirm the price with your guide or the handler before you set off, and bring cash in small notes.
